Plumbing problems can be caught early or prevented all together if you utilize your available resources to take a few precautions. The key to damage control and minimizing the potential of damage is early detection. Early detection can save you a lot of money in the long run because you won’t have to worry about costly repairs later from small, inexpensive parts breaking, and causing more expensive problems like water damage and black mold.

How Do You Prepare?

The first step is obvious. Hire a Plumber in Baltimore to come out and do an initial and thorough inspection of your plumbing network. You can visit this site to get more information about exactly what services a plumber in Baltimore offers: SafferpPumbing.com.

Doing this right will take some time and may cost you a nominal fee for the professional’s time and the businesses expenses but you get more than your money’s worth.

What Do They Do?

They will bring their van full of innovative and powerful equipment which includes a way to flush out and scrub your plumbing and drains so all that build up and toxic bacteria that may be hiding inside your pipes and especially drains, are removed. This alone is a wonderful thing and gives you and your family a sense of security in your drinking water and drains being clear.

Leaking, Loud, Broken Faucets, and Slow/Clogged Drains

Faucets years old and just lose integrity; sometimes due to the use of harsh chemical cleaners around the faucet parts that can corrode pieces and especially rubber parts. A variety of things can cause a faucet to start leaking, making noises, and outright break throwing water all over the place.

The trick to preventing a leaky faucet is to replace either the faucet itself or parts in it after several years of use. Clogged or blocked drains due to soap and debris collecting and creating a dam on the inside of your drain slows the water flow; worse it can back up into your shower as a puddle up to your ankles pushing that nasty bacteria to your skin. A good drain flushing by an experienced plumber is a god-send!

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Wikinews has learned at least six of the United Kingdom’s main Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have implemented monitoring and filtering mechanisms that are causing major problems for UK contributors on websites operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, in addition to 1,200 other websites. The filters appear to be applied because Wikimedia sites are hosting a Scorpions album cover which some call child pornography. Scorpions are a German hard rock band who have used several controversial album covers and are perhaps best known for the song Rock You Like a Hurricane.

The measures applied redirect traffic for a significant portion of the UK’s Internet population through six servers which can log and filter the content available to the end user. A serious side-effect of this is the inability of administrators on Wikimedia sites to block vandals, and other troublemakers, without potentially impacting hundreds of thousands of innocent UK contributors who work on WMF sites in good faith.

The filtering is in response to the Internet Watch Foundation‘s list of websites that host content reported to contain inappropriate images of naked children. The IWF considers those images child pornography. However, in the United States, where the websites of the Wikimedia Foundation are hosted, it is not considered obscene under the criteria of the Miller test, which requires that an obscene work lack “serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value” – as album art is used to “brand” the album, it is considered to be artistic.

Contributors or individuals attempting to view an affected image or file, depending on their ISP, may get a warning saying, “we have blocked this page because, according to the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), it contains indecent images of children or pointers to them; you could be breaking UK law if you viewed the page.” Other ISPs provide blank pages, 404 errors, or other means of blocking the content. Due to a configuration mistake at one Internet service provider, some users have reported being totally unable to access Wikimedia sites to the Wikipedia technical help desk.

HAVE YOUR SAY
Is this action on the part of the IWF and various UK ISPs appropriate?
Add or view comments

“The Protection of Children Act 1978 as amended in the Sexual Offences Act 2003, makes it an offence to take, make, permit to be taken, distribute, show, possess with intent to distribute, and advertise indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children under the age of eighteen. The ‘making’ of such images includes downloading, that is, making a copy of a child sexual abuse image on a computer, so, in the UK, accessing such content online is a serious criminal offence,” says the IWF on their website in an article updated on November 28. The IWF say there are at least 800 to 1,200 websites on the list of those who host or contain offensive material. The list is not public and the IWF never notified Wikimedia Foundation about the blocking of Wikipedia content. The affected page does not display any message informing the user about blocked content on most ISPs, instead, a technical error message is shown.

However, Demon Internet redirects users to a block message on the IWF’s site explaining that the page was blocked as the organization suspects child porn or links to it to be present. The IWF states that, “we do not notify site owners that their websites are on our list.”

The concern for Wikimedia is for some images like an album cover from a 1976 record of the Scorpions titled Virgin Killer. It displays an underage girl, posing nude, with a lens crack crossing over her genitals, but nothing blocking out her breasts. The girl appears to be around ten years old. In the U.S., the band later replaced the image with one of the group. The cover was uploaded to Wikipedia in 2006, but Wikinews learned that on May 9, 2008 at (21:17 UTC), despite a result of strong consensus to ‘keep’ in a deletion request, the image was deleted, however for a different reason. It was deleted due to a claim by an administrator that it violated Wikipedia’s policy for dealing with copyrighted images, which require that any images used under the doctrine of fair use must alongside other criteria, “significantly increase readers’ understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding”, with the administrator claiming that the article “lacked meaningful discussion” of the album art. This result was overturned using the deletion review process. Earlier, on December 6, the image was put back up for a deletion request, but it was later closed as Wikimedia “does not censor”.

Another image that is questionable could be a screenshot from the 1938 film Child Bride. Its goal was to bring to light the attempts at banning child marriages. In the article on Wikipedia, a screenshot appears of then 12-year-old Shirley Mills partially naked after skinny dipping. In the photo, at least one of her breasts can be seen.

Other albums featuring nudity below the age of sixteen have previously caused controversy; Blind Faith attracted criticism as did Houses of the Holy, and Nirvana’s Nevermind.

Multiple companies have gone public stating that they implement the recommendations of the Internet Watch Foundation. Not all of these are known to have implemented measures against Wikimedia sites; the major UK ISPs thought to have affected Wikimedia sites are Telefonica O2/Be Unlimited, Virgin Media, Easynet, Plusnet, Demon, and Opal Telecommunications (TalkTalk).

Wikinews has contacted Wikimedia’s legal counsel, Mike Godwin and the IWF for a statement, but neither have replied as of this time.

In Edinburgh, capital of Scotland, part of an underground water piping system has exploded, forcing local residents to be evacuated. The pipe broke around 03:30 BST (0230 UTC) today, within Allan Park Road, causing flooding in the Slateford area of the city.

A spokesperson for Scottish sewerage and water corporation Scottish Water explained: “Early this morning reports were received of flooding in Allan Park Road and Scottish Water operatives attended the scene. A large diameter water main had burst. The water was shut off and re-routed via other pipes to keep supplies flowing to households in the area. Repairs are under way and the customers affected by the flooding are being offered assistance.”

Stating that repairs to resolve this problem had commenced and would take a few hours to conclude, Lothian and Borders Police have advised that the floods may disrupt the supplies of water and other utilities, as well as transportation on roads and railways in the west of Edinburgh. Hospitals and rest homes in the region have been notified of the incident and bottled water is now anticipated to be supplied at these buildings.

According to local residents, Slateford Road (A70), a major throughway, was closed for several hours this morning. Telephony and broadband in the area is disrupted, with local residents and businesses having to rely on cellphones. Further work, such as digging up the road and using temporary traffic lights, will be required to restore these services in the area.

As of 13:15 BST (1215 UTC), Scottish Water has excavated around the burst main, but has not yet begun work on replacing the damaged section of pipe.

Its Wondrous Beauty

One of the greatest assets that the Maine real estate market could offer to any buyer is its beautiful scenery. Maine, which is a state that is part of United States’ New England region, is famed for its jagged coastline that is mostly rocky, its interiors that are quite heavily forested as well as for its rolling mountains that are low and quite breathtaking.

The quite unique landscape of the state, which geologists describe as a drowned coast, offers islands that came out of the top of its mountains and bays that were created out of its valleys. This type of landscape was said to have been the result of the invasion of the sea level that rose to cover these former features of Maine’s land. These coastal views provided by these outstanding landscapes are not only attractive to the tourists but also to people who may want to buy Maine real estate, so they could live amidst all these beauty.

Special Cuisines

People cannot live without food. Because of this, states that offer the best when it comes to whatever types of cuisine always lures not only just visitors but permanent residents. When it comes to food, Maine also has a great asset up its sleeve and that is their seafood cuisine. The state is very well known for its specialty clams and lobsters. If scenic landscapes and great food are not enough assets to lure investors and buyers into the Maine real estate market, then another notable thing about the state could be its invigorating weather.

Perfect Summer

Summers in the state are usually warm and humid, perfect climate for taking in the grandeur of the coastline. Its winters, which are mostly cold with snowfall, could also be considered by those who love this season as perfect for those snowball fights or for drinking in those hot toddies. While Maine’s weather, especially during summer, is one reason that draws to the tourist to the state, it could also be one that could lure more people to buy Maine real estate making investing into real estate properties a very lucrative business in the area.

Booming Economy

It also won’t hurt for anyone to note that the state is not suffering when it comes to its economy. They are doing more than just getting by as evidenced by the total GSP of $41 billion that was recorded in 2003. The average person is not hurting in Maine also, with the per capita income per person noted at $29,164. Maine’s stable economy is derived not only from its tourism industry but also from its agricultural and industrial outputs. Construction and the building of naval ships remain a key earner for the state’s economy as well.

Great Minds from Good Education

Another factor that would greatly influence anyone to buy Maine real estate is the quality of higher education that is offered by the state. Because most people who would want to buy properties are usually those with kids, investors would be very glad to take note that Maine boasts of quite a number of public and private schools as well as colleges and universities. These learning institutions are prided to offer among the best quality of education in the United States.

How to make money onlineis it very difficult? And this is a question being asked by possibly hundreds of thousands of people around the world every day. Well, the simple answer to that question is NO, the process is not all that difficult but it is not really all that easy either. The reason it is not as easy as a lot of E-books on the web keep trying to kid you that it is, is because you have to be prepared to LEARN how it is done and learning always requires time and some effort.

So how to make money online is simply a business and should be treated as any other business venture. You absolutely have to learn and understand HOW its done and all the information required on how to make money online is being made freely available to you by the end of this article.

Now you can find a zillion e-books on the web telling you all the various aspects of what is required to be successful. But–you will never be successful if you do not learn and understand how to filter out only the required information and link it all together to make money online. And even with all these great e-books and Gurus giving advice, you really have virtually nobody explaining how to gather and link it all into the correct steps so necessary to achieve success. Possibly because each of those gurus are experts in their own little niche and maybe dont know or are not concerned with how important it is that the required parts are linked together in the correct order.

Maybe this will build a better picture in your mindJust think about it like building a house. In building a house, you have to start with the foundations and finish with a roof but there are a lot of steps in between which have to be followed in a correct order for the house to be livable.

And again, you can find any number of very knowledgeable experts who can tell you all about architecture, foundations, floors, walls, ceilings, electrical fittings, plumbing etc. etc. but practically none of them could ever link it all together to build a house. Thats why you have to be prepared to spend some time to first learn the required necessary steps and how they all link together because you are going to be the builder who PUTS IT ALL TOGETHER. There is no magic bullet.

Well, no, there is no magic bullet, but things now are nowhere near as tough or difficult as they were up until twelve months or so ago. Up until then, with absolutely no idea in the world of what you were really looking for, you had to go out into that forest of gurus and e-books on the web and then try to pick out the bits and pieces of information that would let you build a web business and make money online. That is of course if only you knew what a web business looked like in the first place. No wonder around 97% of people tryingfailed; actually you would really have to wonder how on earth 3% ever succeeded. But like they say The times they are achanging

Fortunately for you and those who want to try to make money online in the future, a revolutionary new concert has been developed simply by looking at the whole web and Internet business from outside the square. There is now a virtually foolproof system availably to ensure you knowing if building a web business really is for you before you ever spend a cent.

So how does it all work?

It works like this. A club has been created and by paying a nominal monthly fee you become a member and are then entitled to the free use of literally thousands of $$$$$s worth of videos, e-books, articles, templates, webinars ect. ect. covering every aspect of how to make money online or to build any other type of web business whatsoever. Bucharest, Romania — The city centre of Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is set to get a major facelift due to a real estate project called Esplanada (The Esplanade), which will be constructed by TriGranit Development Corporation. The total investment in the project will be greater than 800 million euro and aims to build a modern commercial pedestrian area in downtown Bucharest, with several shopping malls, office buildings, hotels and dwellings. It will be the largest real estate program in Romania since the fall of Communism in 1989.

Bucharest is currently looking at possibilities to improve its appearance and rebrand itself as a lively, creative and vibrant city. Many initiatives have sprung up to improve the city, including the organisation of CowParade later this year. Additionally, the old town centre will be restored. Due to Romania’s current economic boom, several other major construction projects are taking place.

Bucharest City Hall has blocked traffic in the city center due both to the old town restoration and to the Esplanada project.

Interesting Ways to Lay Out Commercial Carpet Tiles

by

Marie Coles

Our office premises requires as much attention as our homes when it comes to interior decorating. To increase the aesthetic appeal of your office interiors and to use flooring that is easiest to maintain, commercial carpet tiles are an effective solution. You can install these tiles in any room of the office and can find some great designs to complement the look of your office space. The use of commercial carpet tiles lets you design your own floor with a vast range of colours and patterns.

The carpet tiles can be installed with an adhesive supplied with the tiles. Just ensure that all the tiles are from the same batch by checking the batch or dye numbers. You can create an effective formal tone by using dark coloured tiles in the corners of the room and contrasting them with a lighter shade in the middle.

A basic layout for commercial carpet tiles can be:

Straight Lay tiles laid square

Diagonal tiles of any size laid on a 45 degree angle

Running bond tiles laid with joints staggered in a brick pattern

Checkerboard adjoining tiles laid with alternating colours

The traditional straight layout has a simple look and may be used in any room. The diagonal tile arrangement may be used for reception flooring and gives a diamond like appearance to the floor. This design is quite common in office or commercial premises too. The running bond layout is also a good option for installing commercial carpet tiles and apart from offices can also be used in hotels or restaurants. The checkerboard pattern as the name suggests gives a checkerboard like appearance to the floor with 2 different colours.

A little bit of creativity and a dash of imagination can create wonderful office interiors. Remember, an aesthetically appealing office interior says a lot about your business and the way you treat your employees and clients. There can be many other interesting ways to lay out modular

commercial carpet tiles

and thanks to the ease of installation, you can use your imagination to create any style as per the look of your office interiors.

In a recent ZNet Commentary, Howard Zinn wrote that a group of people, including Gino Strada, Paul Farmer, Kurt Vonnegut, Nadine Gordimer, and Eduardo Galeano, are promoting the creation of worldwide gatherings to renounce war. Their intention, according to Zinn, is to make worldwide renunciation of war so popular that halting existing wars and preventing the beginning of new wars is politically irresistible.

In his article, After This War, Zinn asks, “should we not think beyond this war? Should we begin to think, even before this shameful war is over, about ending our addiction to massive violence, and using the enormous wealth of our country for human needs?” He goes on to talk of ending not just “this war or that war but war itself. Perhaps the time has come to bring an end to war, and turn the human race onto a path of health and healing.”

The five people have been actively involved in global issues for many years and have a solid track record of accomplishments on the world stage.

Dr. Gino Strada is a war surgeon and the founder of Emergency, a nonprofit, humanitarian organization dedicated to providing assistance to civilian victims of war. His recent book Green Parrots: A War Surgeon’s Diary helped persuade Italy to abandon the use and manufacture of a flying anti-personnel mine.

Dr. Paul Farmer is a Harvard professor and practicing physician. In 1987, he helped found the worldwide health organization Partners in Health, which treats some of the poorest people on Earth. Dr. Paul Farmer has received a “genius” award from the MacArthur Foundation.

Kurt Vonnegut is an American writer and humanist, currently serving as Honorary President of the American Humanist Association. As a WWII prisoner of war in Dresden, Germany, Kurt witnessed the fire bombing of Dresden. This event formed the core of his book Slaughterhouse-Five. In a column for In These Times, he began “… our leaders are power-drunk chimpanzees … the morale of our soldiers fighting and dying in the Middle East … like so many bodies, is already shot to pieces. They are being treated, as I never was, like toys a rich kid got for Christmas.”

Nadine Gordimer from South Africa received the 1991 Nobel Prize in literature and 1974 Booker Prize. She received worldwide praise for her leadership for South Africa to re-examine and replace its long held racist policy of apartheid.

Eduardo Galeano’s books combine history, political analysis, journalism and fiction. “I’m a writer obsessed with remembering, with remembering the past of America … condemned to amnesia. The Open Veins of Latin America is one of Galeano’s works covering the exploitation of Latin America by foreign powers from the 15th century onwards.

Both Nadine and Eduardo’s books are recognized by the Great Books Foundation as among the top 40 books in Citizens of the World: Readings in Human Rights. We Say No by Eduardo Galeano and Comrades by Nadine Gordimer are listed there along with the Emancipation Proclamation of Abraham Lincoln, Independence by Mahatma Gandhi, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and Letter from Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King Jr.

Howard Zinn is a U.S. historian, political scientist and author of fifteen books. Howard writes, “In a world of clashing interests—war against peace, nationalism against internationalism, equality against greed, and democracy against elitism—- it seems to me both impossible and undesirable to be neutral in those conflicts. I do not claim to be neutral, nor do I want to be… . I will try to be fair to opposing ideas by accurately representing them.”

New Zealand PM drops in on Microsoft

Prime Minister Helen Clark of New Zealand visited Microsoft‘s corporate headquarters in Seattle last week. She was welcomed by CEO Steve Ballmer, senior vice-president and CFO Chris Liddell, a New Zealander, and Microsoft New Zealand managing director Helen Robinson.

During the visit, they looked at ways technology could help the continuing growth of New Zealand’s economic development. Ms Clark also examined Microsoft’s newest productivity software, mainly including offerings in the areas of video conferencing and online collaboration tools. “There is no comparison” between Microsoft’s technology and that of the Beehive, Clark said after the meeting.

This disparity she blamed “unquestionably” on the state of New Zealand broadband Internet access, which still uses the outdated copper ‘local loop’ system. She also referred to the importance of fibre optic networks, which “some are now calling the ‘fourth utility’.”

Mr Liddell responded that despite New Zealand being behind in some areas, “…the rate of change is such that that is not really such a big issue. …I don’t see New Zealand at a disadvantage and one of the great things about New Zealand is we are early adopters of technology. Attitude is as important as current status.”

“We have got what is radical telecommunications legislation reform, but you can’t stand still and think that will do the trick either. We have got a lot of technological challenges but I think the will to address them,” Ms Clark said.

Unlike other guests, Ms Clark was not given a copy of the new Windows Vista during her visit. Instead, she was given a glass plate and a paperweight.

The visit to Microsoft follows her meeting with United States President Bush.
